Ash Barn is the home of Digg & Co. Its creation helped the company stepping stone in the direction we travel today.
The build was largely inspired by recent MA research that touched on the Living Building Challenge, an idea founded by Architects Jason McLennon and Bob Berkabile. After a set of meetings with the European ambassador for LBC, Martin Brown, it became clear that the philosophy was already baked into the DNA of Digg & Co., and, we knew we had to attempt the challenge as so many of our founding principles were built on a similar mind-set and way of being.
The build must undertake Listed Building Consent as the barn farmyard lay above a Grade 2 listed farmhouse. Our conditions included the retention of old pine trusses, and existing external doors and to retain the footprint as found. It was a bizarre twist of fate as the listed building alterations we made actually benefited, simplifying and reducing cost overall.
Built out of natural materials such as Cob, lime plaster, stone, earth, and timber, the building and its many materials actually create and enrich habitats here on the farm. Making it not just a space for us and the company, but for many of the wonderful creatures who also call this place home.
