Haymans Farm - Permaculture Market Garden - West Sussex

Stage - In Construction

The permaculture garden embraces a holistic design approach that draws inspiration from natural systems, promoting long-term cultivation. Through careful observation and strategic placement of planting beds, trees, and shrubs, as well as considering sunlight and wind patterns, the garden can be prepared for future mindful maintenance.

The objective was to establish an ecologically rich, productive market garden within the larger farm. The design was guided by the principles of permaculture to naturally encourage productivity while enhancing biodiversity, resource conservation, and ecological equilibrium. Key components of the project included considerations for hydrology, the use of solar power for rainwater irrigation, and the strategic placement of trees and shrubs to provide shade and wind protection.

The market garden's design incorporated vegetable beds of varying heights in dome-like formations, creating microclimates and expanding the available planting space. Maintenance practices emphasise composting and effective moisture management. The primary goal of the project was to promote regenerative practices that support nutritious food production and improved soil health.
