Nestling into the ‘Throat’ of the Harthanger wood, with long distance views down to the Exmoor village of Luxborough, Throat Farm was contemplating its future. A hunting lodge turned farmstead, this quirky Pink cottage has been lovingly restored by the new owners in a fascinating old meets new collaboration.
Smitten by the wildness and untamed aesthetic which greeted the clients, we have been engaged in a story of re-birth over the last 2 years.
Initially the work was to settle the refurbished house back into the contractor trammeled landscape and a series of wild meadows were conceived to tie this isolated dwelling into its rich floral surrounds. Ferns abound by the characterful miniature cascades and the local shillet was used to ‘ditch’ retaining elements and steps. Slate flags set into grass offer stepping stones across the flowering lawns and both a white garden and fruit and veg area offer punctuations to the otherwise wild landscape.
Today the meadows are maturing, rich in species and awash with bees and insects of all types. The house and nearby studio begins to rest easy in the languid movement of the swaying trees and wildflowers.
